Sažetak
Introduction Alcohol is a rich source of energy (7.1 kcal/g). There are conflicting results on association between alcohol consumption and weigh gain in humans. In animas, both ethanol and red wine did not promote body weight gain in comparison to water. Effects of white wine on weight gain and food intake in rats have not been investigated. It is also unknown whether alcohol consumption causes different effects on weight gain in animals of different age and development phase. Our aim was to investigate the white wine effects on weight gain in younger (phase of fast growth) and older/grown (phase of slower growth) rats in 4 weeks consumption trial. In addition, we analyzed food intake and total liquid intake and their association with body weight gain rate. Methods Younger group consisted of 15, one month old male rats, weighing 150-200 g, and grown group included 21 rats, approximately 3 months old, weighing 400-500 g. The groups were further divided into wine (N=10 for both young and grown rats) and control, water-only-drinking groups (N=5 and 11 for young and grown rats, respectively). The rats were fed a standard pellet diet ad libitum. The wine drinking rats were offered dry white wine ad libitum, 24 hours/day for 4 weeks with daily inclusion of tap water for 6 hours. Fluids intake was recorded daily. Body weight and food intake were measured weekly. The results are reported as means ± SD. Data were compared by the Student t-test, with the level of significance set at P<0.05. Results Young rats had smaller weight gain both weekly and after 4 weeks of white wine consumption in comparison to controls. The same effect was observed in grown animals. There was no significant difference in total daily liquid intake, but weekly and total food intake was reduced in all wine-consuming rats. Conclusion White wine consumption decreases weight gain in rats regardless of their age and initial body mass. It seems that additional calories provided by wine were compensated for by reduced intake of food.
