In the territory of Croatia research has not yet been conducted on the morphometric and meristic characteristics of Sabanejewia balcanica (Karaman, 1922). The analysis of the morphometric characteristics referred to 16 factors, and the meristic ones referred to the number of hard and soft rays in the fins. During 2001 a large number of S. balcanica Kar. specimens were collected at two localities at a distance of one hundred kilometers in the area of central Croatia. The first locality is situated in the Papuk mountain area, and the other in the area of Banovina. The statistically elaborated morphometric and meristic characteristics have indicated certain differences between these two populations. The obtained results are the first such presentation of the morphologic and meristic characteristics of the S. balcanica Kar. species in the territory of Croatia, and are compared with the results of similar studies carried out in the area of Slovenia and Russia.
