Sažetak
The authors here examine several aspects of the old problem of forming Illyricum as a Roman province in the 1st cent. BC. Two fields of research have been discussed in recent publications. There are data of the ancient literature and inscriptions that can be reviewed and re-interpreted and here it seems opportune to make an assessment, as well to indicate some new approaches. On the other hand, the gradual progress of archaeological research added to the understanding of the conditions and relations on the coastal area of Illyricum in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. During that period there was a significant transformation, especially of native communities and their cultural and economic integration in the Roman-Hellenistic world. In this context from the beginning of the 1st century BC, there is an even stronger Roman influence, together with the settlement of the Romans. Now it seems possible to consider closely at the process that led to the integration of heterogeneous entities which Rome previously subdued along the east coast of the Adriatic. In this instance, the authors discuss elements of the organization of the Illyricum up to its division in two provinces (beginning of the 1st century AD).
