Sažetak
The presented study covering research from 1988 to 2002, gives new data regarding the geographical distribution and the ecological features of the Sabanejewia balcanica (Karaman, 1922) species in Croatia. The research included smaller rivers and mountain streams in central Croatia (the Danube river-basin), with a relatively numerous population of S. balcanica, with regard to bigger river water courses (Drava, Sava). During the investigation, a number of water courses in the area of Banovina (Zrinska gora), and western Slavonia (the mountains of Bilogora and Papuk) were analyzed. In addition to the biological data, the analysis also included: data on the amount of oxygen, pH, the speed of the water course, the flow rate of the water course and the biological oxygen consumption. In addition to the on-site research in the mentioned areas, for the purpose of a more detailed insight into the distribution of the S. balcanica Kar. species in the area of central Croatia, the data from studies by other authors were also included. For all the flowing waters the research has covered: the highest, spring part, the middle and the lowest as well as the lower parts of the non-stagnant water course. All these parts are specific by some physical and chemical characteristics and the substrata at the bottom. In parts of the flowing water on the lower above-sea levels together with the S. balcanica Kar. species there exist three other species of the Cobitidae family: Cobitis taenia L., Cobitis elongata Hec. & Kner. and Misgurus fossilis L. More upwards in the central and spring part of the flowing water, where the bottom is gravel-pebbled, the S. balcanica species is the only representative of the Cobitidae family. Our research data comply with the results of other authors, which indicate that the larger populations of the S. balcanica species are in smaller rivers and bigger streams.
