Sažetak
In this paper rhe concept of using smartphones to determine the level of roughness of pavement surface on the observed road network elements is considered. An accelerometer built into the smartphone, enables detection of irregularities in the pavement surface on the basis of measured changes in the values of acceleration. While driving across the larger deformations on the pavement surface great vibrations are created on the vehicle which causes abrupt changes in the values of current acceleration, while on the other hand on relatively flat pavement surfaces vehicle vibrations and changes in the values of current acceleration are much smaller. Measured changes in the values of current acceleration enable detection of pavement suraface roughness on the observed road network segments. Based on the determined values of pavement roughness on certain sections of road network it is possible to determine the impact of defects and deformations on the pavement surface on the existing level of road traffic safety. The measured values of acceleration are required in determining the value of international road roughness index (IRI) and for the evaluation and monitoring of pavement surface quality and the selection of priorities and ways of remediation of pavement surface on certain parts of the observed road network segments.
