Sažetak
Abstract One of the relatively new diagnoses of personality disorder is a “Borderline personality disorder”. People suffering from a borderline personality disorder complain of feeling inner emptiness, boredom and a lack of sens, also the feeling of inner emptiness. Aim of this article is to emphasize the importance of early detection of borderline personality disorder in order to start adequate pharmacological treatment on time. Patients and methods We present the case of a sixty year old female patient that has been in psychiatric treatment for the last fifteen years. During the last two years of her treatment she has been diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder, following a psychotic decompensation which required treatment with an atypical antipsychotic. Results The first time she sought help from a psychiatrist was after the death of her husband, when she presented with the symptoms of severe anxiety of a psychotic level and sleep disorder. During the whole treatment she was treated with antipsychotic and hypnotic medications in varying doses which she also abused. Discussion Does early detection and diagnosing of a borderline personality structure enable timely and adequate psychopharmacologic treatment which can prevent psychotic decompensations that are extremely unpleasant for the patient? Also, would early detection and treatment prevent abuse and dependence of anxiolytic and hypnotic medications? Conclusion Early detection and diagnosis of a borderline personality structure is important because on time administered and efficacious medications can enable the patient to have a better quality of life.
