Sažetak
In general, society still views menstruation as strictly a part of the cis-women experience. Little is known about transgender individuals’ attitudes toward and experiences with menstruation. Although there has been little or no work on this topic by social scientists or healthcare providers, there are many blog posts or videos by transgender authors sharing their personal experiences with menstruation. The aim of this study was to gather information about the attitudes toward and experiences with menstruation among transgender men. Participants generally reported more negative attitudes toward menarche and menstruation and expressed positive attitudes toward menstrual suppression. The experience of transmen highlighted four main sources of distress: the first period is usually a very distressful event ; menstruation is a subject that they do not want to talk about ; feelings of “menstruation shame” ; and hygiene during menstruation. The level of distress associated with menstruation is high but somewhat lower than for that associated with breasts, which is consistent with the greater social visibility of breasts. Because secrecy arose as being most important to our participants, the topic of menstruation should be offered to trans individuals, but not be insisted upon. The results of this research confirm the main topic of the conference – INSIDE MATTERS.
