Sažetak
In 1879, a small group of intellectuals and clergy, led by first professional Croatian speaking art historian Izidor Krsnjavi, established the Arts society. The main aim of the society was to popularize art and general taste of the public, but also to stimulate arts and craft production. Soon after, the Arts society established the Museum for Arts and Crafts and the Crafts school with the help of local government led by Hungarian speaking viceroy Khuen Hedervary who was appointed with the main goal of pacification of Croatian national demands. The idea for the society, the museum and school came from Krsnjavi, who was schooled in Vienna where he got acquainted with the arts and crafts movement from his professor and director of the Museum for Arts and Industry Rudolf von Eitelberger. Eitelberger was influenced by the South Kensington Museum in London which was organized to research and promote collection of applied arts from whole British Empire. It also needed to educate citizens to main rules of good taste and to promote superiority of British products at international fairs and exhibitions. Main idea behind the project was that applied arts are appropriate medium which can easily breach into households throughout the Habsburg Monarchy and integrate people. Theoretical background for such project of establishing multinational Austrian identity was aesthetics produced by imperial scholars. Unlike Eitelberger who had similar imperial ideas regarding the organization of museum, Krsnjavi translated its context in local culture and, instead of making imperial museum, made a national one. Although the museum served to prove distinct Croatian culture and talent, its other goal was to construct common multinational culture with the imperial center and other nationalities of the Monarchy. The main idea behind the Museum for Arts and Crafts and the Crafts school in Zagreb was to educate general public in good taste and new class of artisans and craftsmen who would help country to prosper in art and economy. Also, the Museum and the School were to help peasants in preserving rapidly disappearing folk arts and craft due to modernization with the research, popularization and export. Similarly, the Crafts school was seen as an institution which would alter modernization characterized by large factories and proletariat by making wealthy middle-class of the craftsmen.
