Sažetak
The cement dust covering the plant organs produce the alkaline microenvironment, what could greatly affect the physiological state of plants The objective of this study was to asses the effect of cement dust on Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) needles growing near the cement factory in Našice, Croatia. The current year needles of spruce were sampled on two different localities: in neighborhood of cement factory in Našice (inside 3 km) and 50 km farther, in Osijek. Sampling was done in December 1999 and in April 2000. Specimens for light microscopy were fixed in 6% glutaraldehyde, dehydrated and embedded in glycol methacrylate. 2 μm thin transversal sections were stained with 0.1% Toluidine blue O. Callous was proved with 0.05% aniline blue. The concentration of photosynthetic pigments was determined spectophotometrically. In needle samples from cement factory neighborhood the callous was present in hypodermal layer of cells as grain-like forms in different size making a coat around the needle mesophyll. The callous was also present in vascular bundle where the distortion of sieve cells was detected as well. There was no callous detected in hypodermal cells of needle samples from Osijek. Photosynthetic pigments content determined in April was 20% lower in samples from cement factory neighborhood than in those from Osijek. This difference was statistically significant.
