Sažetak
Cochlear implant is the first sensory neuroprosthesis which found its practical use in clinical medicine. The authors were the first to perform CI in Croatia in 1996, without any assistance of the colleagues from abroad. Also they were the first to do pediatric CI in a 3-year-old child, and ever since a number of CIs was performed by this surgical team. In January 1999, the team was the first to perform an ABI surgery in Croatia. The study is based on the authors' experience, and special attention is paid to the presentation of CI components, surgical technique, surgical complications and indications for the surgery. Apart of a huge benefit, acquired by the surgery, the deaf patients are also faced with some sort of limitations in everyday life. Only with the rehabilitation following surgery, CI is fully efficient. CI is a costly procedure and, for this reason, financial policy, cost benefit analysis and the attitude of Deaf Communities should be considered when selecting the future patients in need of the CI.
