Sažetak
The current international efforts at the EU level are aimed at making guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease based on a peer-reviewed evidence-based reports for the guidance of practice for clinical neurologists, geriatricians, psychiatrists, and other specialist physicians responsible for the care of patients with dementia. It will cover major aspects of diagnostic evaluation and treatment, with particular emphasis on the need to update criteria with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. The main focus is Alzheimer's disease, but many of the recommendations will also apply to other primary causes of dementia and dementia disorders in general. Besides CSF analysis, the recommendations will also include clinical diagnosis, blood tests, neuroimaging, electroencephalography (EEG), genetic testing, tissue biopsy, disclosure of diagnosis, treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and counselling and support for caregivers. It is expected that new recommendations will also be added for the treatment of vascular dementia, Parkinson's disease dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies, for monitoring treatment, for treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia, and for legal issues. This guideline is also expected to contribute to the definition of the role of the specialist physician in providing dementia health care.
