Sažetak
Contemporary approach to planning the teaching process involves careful planning of students’ engagement in learning at home. The role and frequency of homework varies in relation to particular subjects and the needs and interests of students. Related to that, this paper reflects on the role of homework in the subject of Nature and Society. Homework is frequently part of everyday life of most students, especially lower primary school students, which shows a clear need for reflection on their purpose, efficiency, and evaluation. Therefore, the aim of the paper was to research why prospective teachers (students in the fourth year at the Faculty of Educatio in Osijek and Slavonski Brod) assign homework in subject Nature and Society. Homework tasks are analyzed in terms of students’ understanding of the role of homework ; i.e. the goals which they are trying to achieve, knowledge, skills abilities they want to develop, and the evaluation elements. The results show that homework assignments are mainly aimed at memorisation of facts and do not include measurable outcomes or evaluation elements. Therefore, the conclusion is that during their initial education prospective teachers need to be trained to assign purposeful homework that would stimulate higher cognitive processes in students and encourage them to explore the contents of Nature and Society.
