Sažetak
The periphery of cities acts as a space for confrontation, as a space between different realities – natural vs. cultural, natural topography vs. built structures, historical vs. contemporary. Peripheral is concerned with relatively minor, irrelevant, or superficial aspects of the subject in question and it differs from periphery – it is an unpredictable and often unwanted result of the urban growth. Peripheral consists of untouched spaces, unfinished landscapes of negative connotations, which are integral part of the city. The perception and a single image of the city of city as a whole can be related to the music. The city, its peripheral and surrounding landscape have to be perceived, planned and developed as a whole, as a single entity. This research is focused on exploring historical and contemporary strategies for re-stitching urban peripheral in the specific areas of the East Coast Adriatic cities of Rijeka and Dubrovnik. These cities differ by historical development, heritage protection status and contemporary life, but are similar in the need of re-stitching their peripheral.
