Sažetak
Favorable historical circumstances enabled big economic growth of Rijeka in the 18th century. In 1719 Rijeka was awarded the status of a free port by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI and shortly afterward a branch of Imperial Privileged Oriental Company was opened in town ; with the purpose of promoting trade with the Levant and the Far East. In that time, Rijeka had become one of the main centers for trade between the Mediterranean and the Central Europe. One of the most prominent merchants and bankers of Rijeka of that time was Giuseppe Minolli. His duties of the city councilor and membership in the respected confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows confirm his importance and high social status. In 1744 he funded the remodeling of the sanctuary and the construction of the tomb and the High Altar in the Church of St. Jerome. The author of High Altar and its sculptures was Antonio Michelazzi (Gradiscad’Isonzo, 1707 – Rijeka, 1771), the most significant master of the Croatian Littoral, Istria, and Kvarner in the 18th century. The donor of the altar, Giuseppe Minolli, with 2000 gold coins established a foundation that supported the everyday celebration of Mass for him, his family, and for the souls in purgatory. Based on the previously unknown last will of Giuseppe Minolli, preserved in the State Archive in Rijeka, this paper will try to reconstruct the life of the donor, as well as the timeline of the order of one the most important marble altars of the 18th century in Croatia.
