Sažetak
The aim of this study is to improve the early and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by combining event-related potentials (ERP) measured non-invasively by electroencephalography (EEG) with biomarkers measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We combined P300 and N200 potentials and reaction time (RT) with CSF biomarkers Aβ1-42, total tau (t-tau), p-tau181, p- tau199, p-tau231, and VILIP-1. Ninety-seven subjects were included in the study including 49 AD patients, 28 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 4 healthy control subjects, and 16 patients with other primary causes of dementia. Our main finding is a moderate to strong correlation between ERP latency of P300 and N200 potentials and these CSF protein biomarkers. As an isolated biomarker, P300 latency detected early AD most successfully with 90.9% sensitivity and 100% specificity. We also confirmed previous observations of moderate to strong correlation between ERP and neuropsychological testing as well as shortened P300 latency and RT in AD patients treated with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Patients with AD were successfully differentiated from patients with frontotemporal dementia using N200 latency and P300 latency. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that diagnostic efficiency of CSF protein biomarkers Aβ1-42, t-tau, p-tau181, p-tau199, p-tau231, and VILIP-1 could be further improved by adding ERP in clinical practice.
