Sažetak
„Morality and aesthetics prove to be congruent, inseparable, too, completely the same, like defiant or calm, like gentle or angry, with which style, from which perspective an author can commence with the description or simple portrayal of humans: (...)“ (Frankfurter Vorlesungen - Frankfurt Lectures: 84) This talk will try to present the link between literature and ethics and the genesis of this development in Böll’s work. Böll’s experiences during the Third Reich and World War II, in which he unwillingly took part as a common soldier for six years, and which he did not want to transfigure or idealise in his war novels and stories, but describe correctly and inform about, with all its absurdity and horrors, were crucial for his ethical and moral views. His explicit intention was to contribute with his works that World War II is not suppressed and forgotten by the German people. He also wanted to name the ones responsible for World War II (especially institutions, organisations and groups), without sweeping at the same time the share of responsibility of the “ordinary” people under the carpet. In the 1950s his engagement turns in favour of the “ordinary” people and social justice and in the 1960s in favour of outsiders of all types. His chief concern were the rights and protection of individuals from state and ecclesiastical institutions and organisations.
