Sažetak
The aim of this research is to find out the correlation between locus of control, self-esteem and body dissatisfaction in the sample of University students, as well as the sex differences among the measures. From a young age, individuals, particularly women, are subjected to unrealistically high standards for physical appearance.Body image concerns are so common among women that researchers have coined the term normative discontent (Rodin, Silberstein & Striegel-Moore, 1984). Extreme body dissatisfaction is a hallmark feature of eating disorders. Low self-esteem (Pokrajac-Bulian & Kandare, 1999-2000 ; Thomas James & Bachmann, 2002) and external locus of control has been shown to correlate with body dissatisfaction, especially in women. It could be predicted that the situation is presently changing toward higer prevalence of body dissatisfaction in male population. The results of the present research are used to suggest the strategies for modification of worry about body weight and physical appearance, which could lower risk behavior (eg. restrictive diet) for development of eating disorders.
