Sažetak
Over 100 million people worldwide play Contract Bridge. Bridge is one of five mind sports recognized by the Global Association of International Sports Federations (ex SportAccord). However, unlike chess, bridge has not often been a subject of scientific research. It is only in recent years that researchers from various disciplines, who study predispositions and effects of playing bridge, have started to collaborate and share their knowledge, theories, and results. The present symposium is a continuation of the two conferences on bridge held in Poland in 2017 and 2018. In rare earlier scientific studies, bridge was found to be one of the most challenging human leisure activities, one that helps in the development and maintenance of cognitive functions, prevents dementia and similar diseases, and has positive effects on the immune system. In more recent studies, authors have found that playing bridge contributes to the well-being of senior players by increasing their sense of accomplishment and affiliation. The aim of this symposium is to present and exchange theoretical knowledge, methodology issues, research findings, and practical applications of bridge-related studies. In this symposium, the recent work on bridge by four authors from three different fields (Sociology, Medicine and Psychology) will be presented. Samantha Punch from the University of Stirling will open the symposium, presenting results regarding interactions within the mind sport, well-being, healthy ageing and social connection as experienced in the bridge community. Kevin Judge from the University of Stirling will present preliminary findings from his PhD research on learning processes in new players. Lana Lučić from the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences will present her research on the well-being of bridge players and differences between those who play regularly and occasionally. Marek Malysa from the Gdańsk University of Technology will present a research on using bridge to alleviate symptoms of cognitive deterioration among patients with diagnosed mild cognitive impairment. Tihana Brkljačić from the Catholic University of Croatia will serve as a host, moderator and discussant of the symposium. Her main scientific interests are in the field of well-being, leisure time, communication and play. She teaches Psychology of Games and Play at the Catholic University of Croatia. She has been studying the well-being and motivation of bridge players and has published several scientific papers on the topic and presented this research at international conferences.
