Sažetak
Mind games (mostly chess) have often been used as a platform to research cognitive performance. Research on chess is usually organized along the following dimensions: perception, memory and knowledge. These studies have contributed significantly to the development of cognitive psychology, mainly through the work of De Groot and his colleagues who analyzed cognitive processes related to chess expertise, while Charness, Engle and Bukstel and Keren examined memory processing and perceptual abilities of bridge players. Saariluoma, Hohlfeld, Kalakoski, Gobet, Simon, de Voogt, Retschitzki and Charness studied bridge players to analyze cognitive schemas, learning and decision-making processes, and training methods that would develop certain mental skills. Mind games also had a tremendous effect on the development of AI algorithms and are still widely used to develop, advance, and test various software. The aim of this workshop is to demonstrate the cognitive processes involved in playing bridge. The participants will first be introduced to the basic rules of the game of bridge. Similarities and differences between bridge and other card and board games will be pointed out with respect to the cognitive skills involved. The workshop will include several examples demonstrating various forms of abstract and analytical thinking and decision-making processes involved in the game.
