Sažetak
OBJECTIVE The intoxication with anxiolytics is an unrecognized medical problem in Croatia. There are no epidemiologic studies concerning poisoning with anxiolytics in Croatia. Occasionally, the overdose or dosing failure is reported as an adverse reaction. Since anxiolytics intoxication is unrecognized as a medical problem, there is no appropriate medical plan or rehabilitation institution specialized for such patients. DESIGN AND METHOD An observational, cohort study was performed in the Emergency Department (ED) at the University Hospital Centre Sisters of Charity, Zagreb, Croatia. The patients examined due to intoxications with anxiolytics during 2001, 2010 and 2015 were included. Patents were treated as per standard therapeutic procedures for poisoning. In this study, we analyzed the number of intoxicated patients with anxiolytics in ED, their age, gender and suicide attempt. RESULTS In total during 2001 there were 154, in 2010 there were 198, and in 2015 there were 119 patients who were intoxicated with anxiolytics. The median age of patients intoxicated with anxiolytics increased through years, it was 32.5 (18-89) years in 2001, 37.0 (18-91) years in 2010, 44.0 (18-95) years in 2015. There was no difference between the number of male and female patients in each year of study and during the study period. In 2001 all patients had intentional intoxications with anxiolytics, out of which 79.2% in the attempt of suicide. In 2010, 99.5% patients intoxicated intentionally, out of which 52, 3% in the attempt of suicide. In 2015, 98.3% intoxicated intentionally, and 60.5% with the suicide attempt. All the medications were taken orally. Total 152 (98.7%) in 2001, 195 (98.5%) in 2010, and 117 (98, 3%) patients in 2015 recovered without sequelae. CONCLUSIONS Anxiolytics are one of the significant substances of intoxication among the studied population. Surprisingly there was no difference in a number of intoxication according to gender. Despite high suicide attempt rate among patients, only 3 patients died from intoxications with anxiolytics during the study - 1 in 2010 and 2 in 2015, which shows good drug safety profile. The abuse was high, though, the safety profile of anxiolytics is relatively good, and they are considered as rarely lethal. Currently, the intoxications with anxiolytics is a severely under-recognized problem in Croatia. There is a need to increase awareness about anxiolytics intoxication in Croatia in order to improve treatment.
