Sažetak
Mother-infant and father-infant bonding can be defined as an emotional bond that parents develop toward infants, while attachment refers to a relationship from infant to parent. The Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) is a 25- item self-report questionnaire on parent-infant bonding. Previous validations have pointed out differences in factor structure across samples. The aim of this study was to examine factor structure, reliability, and discriminant validity of the Croatian version of the PBQ. Participants were 597 parents (170 fathers) of infants aged 1–12 months. The participants completed an online questionnaire comprising the PBQ, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and general data sheet. We compared several alternative models from previous validations using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). All tested models, including the original four-factor solution had a bad fit to the data. Therefore, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis. After we excluded five items with unsatisfactory loadings, three factors were obtained. The CFA with the three-factor structure model showed an excellent fit. Also, the one-factor model fitted well to the data. The internal consistency for the total 20-item scale was excellent. Subscales also had very good reliability. Primiparous and multiparous parents did not differ significantly in scores on the total scale or the subscales. The total scale and all subscales were in low to moderate positive correlation with depression, implying satisfactory divergent validity. To conclude, the shorter 20-item PBQ version with a three-factor structure is a valid and reliable measure of parent-infant bonding. In the Croatian sample, both the total scale and three subscales could be used. Given that early parent-infant bonding could impact later child development, detecting parents with bonding difficulties should be a priority.
