Sažetak
Integration of refugees has been raising an insufficient research interest in the countries of the Southeast Europe, where the refugees, in the sense of persons who were granted the international protection after the year 2000, represent a new migrant community. From the viewpoint of cultural anthropology and based on the qualitative research that has been conducted from spring 2015 onwards, this paper discusses integration of refugees in Croatia through sport. The research is based on an ethnography of the particular (cf. Abu-Lughod 1991), involving participant observation and open and semi-structured interviews with refugees and representatives of organisations involved in integration. The aim of the paper is to explore which dimensions of integration (Garcés-Mascareñas and Penninx, 2016) participation in sport can have for persons that are seeking for or were granted asylum in Croatia. The paper compares the results of other European empirical research with the ones obtained in Croatia, questioning the theses of some scholars (cf. Spracklen, Long and Hylton, 2015) that sport is more an area of creating distinction and status than an area for inclusion and building social bridges between the host society and immigrants. On the contrary, the case study of refugees in Croatia has demonstrated that sport is an important factor of integration, as, according to an interviewee, “in sport we are all equal”.
