Sažetak
The starting point of this paper is the wish to show how a myth, as a part of immaterial/intangible heritage, can be of assistance in developing sustainable tourism and can stimulate the local population in participating fully in tourism. It can also influence visitors and professionals in experiencing and preserving the unique features of a destination, such as environment, culture, heritage, aesthetics and community. The World Tourist Organization (WTO 2001) considers that, in order to maintain sustainable tourism, one has to respect the local culture and tradition, and foreign visitors should be acquainted with the local mode of behavior, language and culture, but also the locals have to learn about different expectation that foreign guests might have. This paper will emphasize the WTO's criteria in aiming for quality, not quantity ; that tourism success can be measured not only by the number of visits and visitors, but also by the duration, consumption, and quality of a touristic experience. WTO also puts emphasize on satisfaction, because a satisfied visitor will upon his return home recommend an unforgettable destination to his friends and relatives, thus helping the destination in tourism.
