Sažetak
The Island of Lokrum, a special nature reserve of forest vegetation is also an area of the Natura 2000 ecological network that includes marine area which extends approximately 150 m off the coast. The ecological network area HR4000017 Lokrum includes a total of 8 habitat types, 3 of them marine types - Posidonia beds (Posidonion Oceanicae), reefs and submerged or partially submerged sea caves. The Island of Lokrum is exposed to strong sea currents that bring marine litter that then gets washed ashore. This is especially visible in winter time when strong southern winds blow. As a part of its main activities - protecting, preserving and maintaining the protected area, Public Institution “Special Reserve of forest vegetation Island Lokrum” continually collects marine litter from the coast. Despite regular clean up efforts, there is insufficient data regarding the locations, types and quantities of litter polluting the island. Since the problem of marine litter washing ashore is becoming more and more visible a map of the locations that are impacted the most was made during 2017. and 2018. for the purpose of creating a continous monitoring scheme. It was organised within the framework of Blue Cleanup – the initiative to clean the sea and the shore as a part of the regional project entitled Let’s do it Mediterranean. During these clean up activities, the employees of Public Institution “Special Reserve of forest vegetation Island Lokrum”, students and volunteers cooperated and collected marine litter that accumulated on. Vegetated sea cliffs of the Mediterranean coasts with endemic Limonium spp., that is also the habitat type of ecological network that makes up the largest part of the coastline. Observations were made regarding the localities with the greatest exposure to marine litter, as well as the quantities of litter at individual localities. Portoč, Bijele Seke, Bočina, Skalica, Uvala pod Manastijerom and Dead Sea were analysed further. The localities are also natural beaches and/or small ports that are additionally impacted by visitors and nautical tourism. The long term aim is to use the map of localities exposed to marine litter to monitor the situation and trends with the goal of finding solutions for this growing problem. Since the Public Institution “Special Reserve of forest vegetation Island Lokrum” stimulated cooperation with higher education institutions in the implementation of field studies, the results of this study is a framework for the implementation of educational programs and student research with the objective of collecting data regarding the status of habitat types and changes in the environment that can be applied in managing the area of the Island of Lokrum.
