Sažetak
In this diploma thesis, translation of English phraseological units (PUs) into Croatian is researched. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the frequency of the most common PU translation strategies and to examine how successfully the PUs are transferred into Croatian. The corpus is based on three films – The Upside, The Backtrack and Now You See Me 2. The films provide a pool of contemporary phraseological units that are analyzed and grouped according to Baker’s translation strategies: translation using an idiom of similar meaning and form ; translation using an idiom of similar meaning, but dissimilar form ; translation by paraphrase ; or translation by omission. Another important aspect investigated in this thesis is the metaphorical value of phraseological units and its retention in translated paraphrases. Metaphorical conceptualization of a certain notion affects the choice of words or expressions in communication. Therefore, for the purpose of this thesis, it was interesting to examine how successfully the metaphor was saved and transferred to Croatian, especially if the translation is done by a paraphrasing process.
