Sažetak
The aim of this thesis is to analyse gender roles and gender stereotypes in The Hunger Games (2008–2010), a trilogy of dystopian young adult novels written by Suzanne Collins. Special emphasis is on the characters whose behaviour is viewed in the context of gender stereotypes and traditional gender roles that society imposes on them. The analysis primarily relies on feminist literary criticism. The main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen is a strong and courageous girl who fights for survival in her own way, and through her actions and decisiveness breaks down traditional stereotypes about women and their role in society. Therefore, the main part of this paper analyses Katniss and her relationships with other (male and female) characters in the trilogy. Based on the analysis of Collins’s novels, the thesis shows that, although gender stereotypes are ubiquitous in any society, it does not mean that they cannot be overcome with certain attitudes or behaviours. The protagonist of this novel proves that stereotypes are an abstract concept, which means they do not really exist if we do not ascribe them any significance. The thesis begins with a brief summary of three novels from The Hunger Games series and a review of scholarly works dedicated to them. Then, through the analysis of Katniss and her relationships with other characters – especially Peeta Mellark – it discusses gender roles and stereotypes. The conclusion summarizes the main findings of the thesis and provides suggestions for future research.
