Sažetak
Jurgen Habermas's concern with the public sphere and the necessary conditions for a genuine democracy can be seen as a central theme of his work. Modern democracy is unimaginable without the ability of critical thinking. Development of the ability to analyze the way you think and present evidence for your ideas is central subject of critical pedagogy. Hence, this paper will analyze theoretical aspects of public sphere and explicate its importance in a development of teaching approach inspired by critical theory knows as critical pedagogy. Critical pedagogy explores the dialogic relationships between teaching and learning and through practical educational movements tries to help students develop a consciousness of freedom. This paper will establish complementarities between Habermas and main authors in the field of critical pedagogy at the levels of philosophy of education and pedagogical theory. Habermas first sketched out a model of what he called the bourgeois public sphere based on development of British, French and German society in late 18th and 19th century. Habermas argues that public sphere serves to fill the gap between the state and the people by creating what he calls a civil society. Further, Habermas argues that a functioning public sphere was key to maintaining a healthy democratic order and deliberative democracy. The principles of public sphere involved an open discussion of all issues of general concern which gave a new framework for authors like Freire, McLaren, Giroux and others to create a new approach in educational practice. Public sphere pedagogy is one of those approaches in critical pedagogy. Its goal is to connect classroom activities with real world civic engagement and this paper will analyze does it have a valid theoretical background in Habermas’s work. Finally, this paper will give a new pedagogical dimension to one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century.
