Sažetak
“Stribor’s Forest” (“Šuma Striborova”) by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić is found in the first edition of her collection of literary fairy tales “Priče iz davnine” [Tales of Long Ago] in 1916. The book appears in an English translation by Fanny S. Copeland (1924), and in a German translation by Camilla Lucerna (1933). Their translations of “Šuma Striborova” are also included in a 2002 international project, an interactive CD-ROM featuring Brlić-Mažuranić’s fairy tales. As a special attraction, it incorporates an animated film version of the tale by Alistair Keddie, a Scottish artist and photographer. The film comes in all three languages, and versions of the full text of the story are illustrated by stills from the cartoon. This paper offers a comparative analysis of the visual and verbal representations of characters and other thematic elements of the tale “Stribor’s Forest” in the versions offered by the CD-ROM. The results reveal several moderate semantic shifts in the English and German interlinguistic translations of the Croatian original, as well as rather noteworthy semantic shifts in the intersemiotic translation of the story, both in its visual and verbal components. These shifts are most conspicuous in the characterisation and in the cultural and ideological frame of the multimodal narrative, presenting a specific authorial interpretation.
