Sažetak
Today's appearance of the historic centre of Zagreb is largely the result of the 19th century political and social changes which spurred the development of what was until that time a small medieval town. This paper will analyze the transformation of Gradec and the development of its suburban settlements from the first half of the 19th century until the Emperor's patent at the end of the 1860s that regulated further construction work. Further on, the paper will present the growth of the Lower Town from old suburban settlements that were urbanized by the construction of larger brick and mortar buildings.
