Sažetak
Bosnia and Herzegovina is located at a migration crossroad between Eastern and Western Europe. Because of the so-called Balkan route, Bosnia and Hercegovina faces the problem of illegal crossings of its borders. Since the beginning of the migrant crisis 2014/2015 there has been a marked increase in the number of illegal migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Migrant crises and a rise in illegal migration with the accompanying security challenges such as human trafficking and smuggling, make migration a major challenge for Bosnia and Herzegovina development. This paper will show how due to the highly complex internal situation, Bosnia and Herzegovina has serious difficulties in the functioning of the political system and the permeability in controlling its borders, and therefore it is a fertile ground for the penetration of contemporary security challenges, of which illegal migration is at the top.
