Sažetak
Tis paper deals with Weidenheim’s description of different nation members and their stereotypes. Both novels are chronicles of the city of Vrbas, i.e. Maresi, where Weidenheim spent his childhood and youth. Walking through the city, the main character recounts his memories and the history of Maresi. As a writer and participant, Weidenheim describes a century-old coexistence and relationships among different nations in Pannonia. While describing events from 1848 and later wars, Weidenheim is also describing relationships among Serbs, Hungarians, Jews and other nations and is looking for causes which led to the expulsion of Danube Swabians, while at the same time not sparing his fellow countrymen. He warned against appearance of nationalism and the insanity of war in an effort to save people from the bloodshed. Tese two novels were published in the 1990s when wars in South-Eastern Europe began again, which led to new expulsions and refuges, but also to the emergence of new writers who narrate about what Weidenheim started half a century before them – about coexistence.
