Sažetak
The concept of sustainability and environment preservation has long been in the forefront of research into materials for road construction. For many waste and industrial byproduct solutions have been found for its application as alternative materials in roads. But different human activities generate new and unexplored wastes and byproducts which have potential to be used as road building material, as opposed to being landfilled. In Croatia, bioash from power plants is a relatively new byproduct material with constantly increasing volumes, especially in eastern region of Croatia. Bioash has potential to be used in road construction as material for improvement of properties of locally available soil and therefore meeting the technical requirements for usage of such material. The emphasis on using of locally available materials, waste and byproduct should be especially put on applications within construction and improvement of low volume rural roads. These types of roads are important part of every transportation system but usually there are not enough funds to use quality materials. Due to the numerous low volume rural roads and growing number of biomass power plants in eastern Croatia, a research into bioash for improvement of local soil and potential application in road construction is being conducted. In this paper results of the preliminary investigation into improvement of bearing capacity of local soil by addition of bioash are shown, with consideration of its application in subgrade or other pavement layers, especially for rural roads.
