Sažetak
The aim of this study was to make a comprehensive assessment of linguistic skills of the hard-of hearing and deaf subjects habilitated by the oral method. Three subjects (1 with profound and 2 with severe hearing impairment) with normal IQ, aged 13, 15 and 20 were given a battery of speech and language tests and tasks. These included Peabody picture vocabulary test, Boston naming test, Token test for children, Articulation test, inflectional and derivational morphology tasks, analysis of narrative language samples and reading and reading comprehension tasks. Despite their substantial hearing loss all three subjects demonstrated satisfactory phonological skills and acceptable speech intelligibility but a low level of overall linguistic competence with limited receptive and expressive vocabulary and language comprehension. The largest delay was found in the morpho-syntactic domain. Although all subjects mastered reading and writing techniques none of them was functionally using reading skills because of their limited vocabulary and inadequate comprehension of morpho-syntactic relations.
