Sažetak
For the purpose of the Geochemical map of the Republic of Croatia in the year 1998 the soil samples at a depth down to 25 cm were collected in a quadratic grid 5x5 km. At the same time the soil profiles in the alluvial sediments of the Sava and Drava rivers were sampled. The analytical work (ICP-AES and FAAS for Hg) was performed on the granulometric fraction <0, 063 mm. The precision and accuracy were satisfactory for all analyzed elements. The soils developed on the alluvial sediments of the Mura river have a higher concentration of Pb, Cd and As in relation to the soils developed on alluvial sediments of the Drava and Sava rivers. The concentration of other elements in soils of the Pomurje area is in range of the measured values for the Drava valley. The concentration of PHES elements in alluvial sediments increases towards the river channel. This can be caused by two reasons: either these elements have been leached by pedogenesis from older alluvial sediments further from the stream, or these sediments reflect a lower contamination of the fluvial area with the heavy metal elements during the preindustrial era. The Drava alluvial sediments have higher concentrations of Pb, Zn and As in relation to other investigated areas in NW Croatia. The decreasing of concentration of all measured elements was observed after the Mura and Drava confluence. The mud particles in the water suspension of the Drava river are highly loaded with anthropogenic Pb and Zn as a consequence of mining, smelting and flotation activities upstream in the Meža valley in the Republic of Slovenia. The soil profiles show that the depth increase results in the lowering of the Pb, Zn, Cd and As content reaching the background level of that area with 80 cm depth. This suggests that the alluvial sediments of preindustrial era lay deeper and that the soil contamination with heavy metals continuously increases up to recent soil horizons. The soil pollution with Hg and As is characteristic for land area with intensive agricultural activities, but the Hg anomaly was also observed in the region of Varaždin as a consequence of city traffic and industry. The source rocks for the Drava river alluvial sediments are predominantly carbonate rocks which results in the higher concentration of Ca and Mg in soil. This is also confirmed by the distribution of these elements in the soil profile. Compared with soils developed in the Drava and Mura valleys, the concentrations of heavy metals in soils developed on alluvial sediments of the Sava river shows the lower pollution. Pollution by Hg mostly on the soils developed on the Sava alluvial sediments. Pollution by Hg of the Sava soils is a consequence of mining in Litija (Slovenia) (Pb, Zn, Hg, Ba etc.), while the anomaly in Zagreb and its surroundings is the result of urban contamination. The soil profile shows the higher pollution of the youngest sediment with Pb, Zn, Cd and As in relation to the older ones. The concentration of these elements decreases with the depth. At the depth of 60 cm they achieve the background values characteristic for the preindustrial era in the studied area. The Sava river drains predominantly carbonate rocks and therefore the soils developed on the Sava alluvial sediments show a higher content of Ca and Mg. The distribution of the latter elements along the soil profile shows that these have been partially leached during pedogenic processes out of the surface horizons depending on the groundwater level.
