Sažetak
The goal of this multi-state pilot research was to assess MyPyramid awareness among Latina WIC participants (N=479, CT n=101 ; OH n=100 ; TX n=174 ; and CA n=104). Average maternal age (27 ± 7.5) was similar across states. Place of birth varied substantially, with the percent of women being born in Mexico ranging from 27% in CT to 81% in TX. Likewise, the amount of time spent living in the US ranged from 6y in OH to 17y in CA. Only 38% of Latinas were aware of MyPyramid ranging from 28% in OH to 50% in CA. Those who had lived longer in the US were significantly more likely to be familiar with MyPyramid (those who were aware had lived in the US for 12.9±9.1 y vs. 10.6±9.3 y among those who were unaware, p=0.008). Our findings support the need for developing and testing culturally appropriate nutrition education interventions tailored to the level of acculturation of different Latina groups.
