Sažetak
Nanoparticles (NP) emerged as an effective tool for mucosal drug delivery providing protection and controlled release of the loaded drug. Poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid anhydride) (PVM/MA) is water-insoluble, mucoadhesive synthetic co-polymer with low toxicity, that is widely used in pharmaceutics and cosmetics. PVM/MA is able to form NP by simple solvent displacement method and could be easily functionalized with different ligands. It was shown that NPs densely coated with low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) are able to readily penetrate the mucus layer, thus overcoming the barrier properties of the mucus layer and rapid NP clearance from the application site. Therefore, the aim of this work was to prepare and characterize both PEGylated and non-PEGylated PVM/MA NP loaded with cefixime (CFX), a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, as a first phase in development of novel mucosal nanodelivery system for this drug. CFX loaded PVM/MA NPs coated with PEG 6000 showed acceptable size and stability. Further studies would be aimed to increase the drug loading efficiency and study its release and mucopenetrative properties.
