Sažetak
The subject of this study is soil profile developed in Eutric Cambisol soil in the vicinity of the Velika Gorica wellfield area of the Zagreb aquifer, Croatia. The main objectives of the investigation were: 1) to determine the sorption characteristics of zinc, copper and cadmium using a batch experiment and 2) to build isotherms of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in soil horizons of Eutric Cambisol in order to detect the potential impact of pollution on groundwater. The sorption experiment on soil bulk samples was made using the multi element solution of blue vitriol (CuSO4•5H2O), zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) in various concentrations. Relative sorption capacity (RSC) was also used to compare the metal sorption capacity of the samples. Based on the results of the experiment, Freundlich sorption isotherms were created for all the soil horizons. Coefficients of determination for Cu is above 0.99 while values for Zn and Cd are slightly lower. Freundlich distribution coefficients are determined from sorption isotherms, and the sequence is Cu > Cd > Zn. The comparison of sorption isotherms has determined that cooper has the best sorption in the soil. The first horizon (A) has the maximum sorption capacity for all PTMs and varies between 82 and 100%. Sorption of potentially toxic metals decreases with depth. In the case of potential accidents and contamination with potentially toxic metals, it is evident that copper will be more bonded to soil particles in comparison to cadmium and zinc.
