Sažetak
Internal or intrinsic values of sport are the core element in the normative conceptions of 1) internalism - begun by Morgan (1987, 1995), using MacIntyre’s account of a social practice, 2) interpretivism - initiated by Russell (1999) and involving of Dworkin’s theory of law, and 3) broad internalism or interpretive formalism – presented by Simon (2000, 2004), which relied heavily on Morgan’s, Russell’s and Butcher & Schneider’s previous accounts. For the last decade or so, sport-philosophical literature was marked by the debate on the role of the social context and history of sports- practice (Morgan) against the rational extraction of the essence of sport (Russell, Simon), as decisive in the internalist normative account of sport. This debate involved many prominent scholars in the field, such as Kretchmar, Lopez Frias, McNamee, Moore, Dixon, MacRea, Hyland, and Durbin. However, it seems that, in the literature so far, internal values were considered only in the universalistic abstract manner. Thus, in this paper, I will take a more practical approach and try to show how and where universal intrinsic values are manifest in actual sporting practice. My plan is as follows: In the first part, I will present how the internal values of sport were described by Morgan, Russell and Simon, just to show their universal abstract character, and be able to raise the question: what are they actually? In the second part, leaning on Morgan’s claim that one can reach internal values in/of sport only through engaging in the practice of sport (Morgan, 1987), I will examine four areas of human sporting life in which internal values become obvious in a concrete and explicit manner: 1) social or intersubjective, 2) emotional, 3) spiritual, and 4) sensual. Finally, I will claim that the internal values of sport can be expressed in their best light through personal “meaningful narratives” (Gleaves, 2017).
