Sažetak
At the time of its appearance in the 13th century, the Franciscans were the offspring of a new communal society that, by developing its self-consciousness before the Church, posed new challenges in all its fields of activity. The Franciscan history of the Middle Ages largely characterizes the Franciscans as an Order peculiar to urban areas. The first monasteries in Croatia were established in the area of Dalmatian communes, and since the mid-13th century, after the Tatar invasion and the establishment of free royal cities, they became an integral part of urban life on the continental Croatia. By the end of the Croatian Middle Ages, in most cases Franciscan monasteries were established within urban settlements with a high degree of urban life. The specific examples of continental Croatian monasteries from the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century will show the Franciscan monastery in individual urban areas as an integral part of its identity, as well as the influence of the monastery on the shaping of certain specifics of a city's life, such as pharmacy and medical services, influence to the economy, etc.
