Sažetak
The research was based on art historians working in Croatian museums with a survey of their opinion on the correspondence of the education at the university to their real needs working in museums. As art museum workers, art historians can be employed as documentation centre managers, curators and museum educators, profiles that all require diverse knowledge and abilities, but all with one and the same education. The contemporary division into research and teaching directions during the study at Croatian universities does not fully meet the needs of museum objectives that are more clearly stated in recent years. In the education system of art historians, emphasis is placed on basic and general knowledge in the field of art history and education, while specific knowledge and skills (needed for museology professions) are not sufficiently elaborated or at best taught through extracurricular activities that do not fully understand and prepare for diverse museum professions. Students do not come into direct personal contact with museum work during their studies and visiting cultural events is only suggested and left to the will of the subject teacher. This survey showed that most respondents believe that they have not been sufficiently prepared for museum work through their university education. The problem for most respondents seems to be insufficient work life practice in museums during the schooling, a practice that would enable direct work life experience. The survey result shows which educational contents art historians working in museums consider necessary for performing specific jobs and which ones are neglected and thus should be implemented in the study program.
