Sažetak
Current problems of Avar-age archeology in Croatia mostly stem from the state of research: a small number of archeologically investigated sites, no fully excavated sites, decades old research with practically no publications, has led to a kind of "falling into oblivion" or "circumventing" that horizon, most prominent in the Eastern Croatia, both in domestic and (subsequently) foreign archaeological literature. Following the development of Avar-age archaeology in the rest of Central Europe, methods have been selected which should enable quality interpretation of the finds and the analysis of Late Avar-age Srijem, area with the highest concentration of Avar-age sites in Croatia. At the same time, a new perspective of Avar-age archeology ; undeniable strong influence of the late antique tradition and/or Byzantine cultural circle in shaping of Avar culture, as well as the long established fact that the 8th Century Avarikum was a regionally highly differentiated area makes Srijem very interesting for study ; a strong late antique tradition, the proximity of the Balkan Byzantine provinces, the geostrategic position that makes it part of the corridor Black Sea-Central Europe, as well as certain occurrences on some of the sites are just some of the factors which indicate that Srijem's Avar-age archeology offers more than just a number of sites. In this lecture, it will be presented how some methodological problems will be dealt with, how the research fits in with new directions of Avar-age archeology and which challenges derive from it.
