Sažetak
Uveal melanoma is the most common primary ocular malignancy in adults and the eye is the second most common site for primary melanoma after the skin. Delays or failures to make an accurate and early diagnosis can have grave consequences. Methods of diagnosis have substantially improved in the past several years, although clinical diagnosis by an experienced examiner remains the standard in the eyes with clear media. Ultrasound is the most useful ancillary diagnostic technique. While enucleation has been the mainstay of therapeutic intervention, alternative therapies, especially different types of irradiation, offer hope for tumor control and vision preservation. Early recognition and diagnosis, before the tumor has progressed into an advanced process with a poor prognosis, can often result in complete cure through early interventional treatments, and it can significantly decrease both morbidity and mortality from this hidden but deadly disease.
