Sažetak
This chapter examines the evolution of Commission policy towards the Yugoslav crisis and its aftermath. It is based on oral accounts (primarily interviews with Jacques Delors, Jacques Santer, Thérése Sobieski, Nikolaus Van der Pas, Robert Cox, Pierre Mirel) and archival sources from the European Commission archives and Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence (in particular the fonds Jacques Delors and François Lamoureux). The introductory section highlights the legal framework and status of EEC-Yugoslav relations before the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars, in order to underline the fact that the European Commission engagement in the 1991 crisis was based on a diplomatic tradition of Commission involvement in Yugoslav affairs which went back to the 1970s and 1980s. The second part examines the role of the European Commission in managing the Yugoslav crisis and the recognition of Croatia and Slovenia in 1991. The last part explores the role that the Commission played after the wars in the stabilization of the region.
