Sažetak
The numerous commentators on Riegl have tended to focus on considerations of a formal or paraphilosophical order, and have been content to disregard the socail implications of his theories. Nevertheless, stilfragen already offered a considerable contribution by revaluating the ornamental creations of a serial type ; and the paper on the contemporary Volkkunst gives a very precise definition of "popular" art. But it is in the Historische Grammatik der bildenden Kunste that Riegl truly clarifies the peculiarities of lat antiquity within a larger perspective by establishing a strict correlation between increased reception of the manifestations of ugliness, or a tendency to equate the respective weights of decorative motifs and background, on the one hand, and the social levelling countenanced by Christianity on the other. Afterwards in the Spatromische Kunstindustrie he attempts to investigate more thoroughly the Kunstwollen of the period in relation to the conception of the world which he sees expressed in several passages of Saint Augustin ; the components of perceived reality are therefore fitted into a system referring to the supernatural and to the divine. In this context, however, Riegl does not allow for a real "democratisation" of culture ; he attributes only to an elite the capacity of mental recomposition required by the dematerialisation of form. Nevertheless, in the context of the current debate it is important to recall riegl's thought ; his key notion of Kunstwollen decisively "installs" artistic phenomena within society.
