Sažetak
The use of the internet/web has a strong influence on the information-seeking behavior of students. Today’s “Google generation” and “Generation Z” students rely heavily on search engines to begin their information search for the purpose of their study. However, not only do they seldom use advanced search strategies, but their “instant” approach to information retrieval may also imply quality, authenticity and reliability issues. The use of library services and traditional printed resources is becoming less popular among students since the internet is commonly their first (and sometimes the only) means for finding information. The information-seeking behavior of students is related to their habits regarding library attendance, their computer and web experience and competence, complexity of the assignment and corresponding information needs. This paper presents findings from a research that examined the study-related information-seeking behavior of graduate ICT students at a Central European university. A pencil-and-paper survey was administered to 70 students to assess their: (a) most commonly used electronic communication channels, (b) information search and retrieval habits and (c) competences for seeking and evaluating information. Our findings indicate the following: (1) the most commonly used communication channel for information search for academic purposes that involves contacting other people for assistance is Facebook, but students also tend to use various other communication channels that are available to them for the same purpose (WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, e-mail, texting, voice call by mobile phone) ; (2) for our sample of ICT-skilled students four distinct styles of information search were identified (traditional use of printed textbooks and visits to library, use of online scholarly resources of proven quality, use of academic Google services like Google Books and Scholar, and use of electronic books and journals ; (3) finally, five factors of competence in information seeking, evaluation and utilization of information in academic activities were revealed, specifically (i) competence in finding information via traditional library resources like catalogue and printed books, journals and encyclopedias ; (ii) competence in using advanced search methods and strategies ; (iii) commitment to activities that ensure best search results ; (iv) evaluation and integration of retrieved information ; (v) bibliographic skills and appropriate document design of an academic/research paper or oral/written presentation.
