Sažetak
The CEFR is a flexible framework which forms the core of language education in Europe, and is easily adapted to the culture and environment of any region. In the context of Japanese language education, the CLIL approach is often viewed as a method which integrates content modeled after distinct regional characteristics. Tourism can be thought of as one source of such content, particularly in Southern Europe where it is a key industry. In this regard, the UNESCO World Heritage List may serve as a vital, objectively evaluated component of tourism as a means of understanding other cultures. Sites on the list embody regional cultural characteristics and enable students to learn Japanese through an understanding of the familiar culture of their own country. Descriptions of sites already included on the World Heritage List in the learners’ regions can be used as study materials for tasks related to newly nominated World Heritage sites. These descriptions vary in their objectives, but often concern works of architecture and art registered in Southern Europe. The range of their characteristics evaluated in the descriptions is based on evaluation expressions which seem to conform to selection criteria set by the UNESCO. The following is an examination of keywords extracted from Japanese language descriptions of World Heritage sites, based on evaluation expressions used in UNESCO’s selection criteria. We looked into how frequently these evaluation expressions are used and how they are modified. A preliminary investigation targeted Southern European World Heritage sites which meet at least three selection criteria, including the notable and widely recognized criterion (i). We examined Japanese language expressions used by the UNESCO standard, local government tourism offices, and Japanese travel agencies. The analysis encompassed 38 sites, mainly in Italy. Keywords were extracted from one text by the UNESCO, one text issued by the local government tourism office, and several texts found on the websites of 10 different travel agencies. The results showed frequent verbatim use of the expression “masterpiece” found in selection criterion (i), “to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius.” No verbatim use of the expression “interchange of cultural values” mentioned in criterion (ii) was found. “Fusion” and “harmony” were used instead. A similar trend was noted for other criteria, except for criterion (i). These results indicate that descriptions of regional architecture and art can be used to become better acquainted with the culture of one’s own country, and to create texts based on UNESCO descriptions of the constantly increasing number of World Heritage Sites, and their translations. Furthermore, local government tourism offices and travel agencies can consult the results to create World Heritage site descriptions which would not be mere translations, but would more closely adhere to the goals of these organizations. They may also serve as a basis for studying Japanese World Heritage sites as a means of furthering the understanding of Japanese culture, and for the study of Japanese culture via comparisons with the cultures of the learners’ countries.
