Sažetak
Very recently ammonia emerged as a potential alternative that can be used as a hydrogen vector and fuel for gas turbines and internal combustion engines. Compared to pure hydrogen, ammonia presents several advantages, namely it has greater volumetric density and it can be liquefied at 0.8 MPa at room temperature, like propane. Moreover, there are already distribution infrastructures being this chemical widely used in agriculture and refrigeration industry. Despite the potential benefits of ammonia as a fuel, there are some drawbacks linked with its toxicity, its heating value, its flame speed and its flammability range. Chemical mechanisms for ammonia combustion are important not only for the development of new combustion systems, but also for the control of NOx emissions. Despite the recent large amount of experimental and modeling studies on ammonia combustion, there is still need for the development of new combustion mechanisms for industrial applications. In this context, the objective of this work is to study the ammonia/hydrogen combustion chemistry under practical industrial conditions. An existing premixed swirl combustor, firing pure ammonia, was simulated using three reduced ammonia chemical mechanisms. This study provides new insights on the ammonia burning conditions closely resembling those in industrial applications and thereby helps to design new industrial burning systems.
