Sažetak
During the first decade of the 20th century, the town of Osijek has experienced a language transformation from the dominant German language to Croatian language. The cause of that was a sudden increase of Croatian ratio towards the German population (according to their mother tongue), but the transformation was accelerated by the Croatian resistance towards hungarisation that was intensively implemented during the governor of Khuen Héderváry. The most significant contributions to the language transformation were the launch of press in Croatian language- the newspaper the Narodna obrana, as well as the establishment of the Croatian National Theatre which had a massively positive response. Public and private life of the Osijekers was marked with a constant contact, as well as with a mixture of languages which continued after the breakdown of Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy.
