Sažetak
Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an emerging zoonotic disease characterized by high temperature, thrombocytopenia, back pain and blurred vision. HFRS is caused by hantaviruses classified as biosafety level 3 pathogens. They are transmitted to humans via aerosolized excretions of infected rodents. Two pahtogenic hantaviruses strains have been confirmed in Croatia Puumala carried by bank voles and DOBV carried by yellow-necked mice. Whole Croatia except the coast and the islands is endemic for HFRS. Outbreaks occur in cyclic epidemics every few years, with sporadic cases every year. The 2017 outbreak started in January. Until November, 371 cases were reported in entire continental Croatia. Epidemiological data analysis showed that patients were predominantly males, aged between 20 and 39 years. More then 90% of the patients were infected with Puumala virus. Wider area of Medvednica mountain is considered endemic focus. Most patients exhibit mild clinical course, without the need for intensive medical care. Less than 4% of patients were infected with Dobrava virus, with one lethal outcome. HFRS outbreaks are associated with the number of small rodents in endemic regions, and indicate unfavorable trends in the ecosystem caused by human activities and climate changes.
