Sažetak
Purpose of this investigation is to evaluate efficacy of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on reduction symptoms in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Etiology of BMS is most likely multicausal, and current treatment possibilities are of limited value. In this study, we performed treatment on 40 patients with BMS. The investigation was single blind – placebo controlled. The first (laser) group, consisting of 20 BMS patients, was treated by active laser. The control (placebo) group, consisting of another 20 BMS patients, underwent sham treatment with inactive laser. In the laser group we used red diode laser (B.T.L. 10, Prague, Czech Republic) with an emission of 685 nm. Irradiation dose was 2 J/cm2, frequency 4, 56 Hz, output 30 mW. The therapy was performed 5 times a week during 2 weeks (all together 10 treatment sessions). Treatment effect was evaluated by visual analogue scale. In both groups symptoms were significantly reduced compared to the pre-treatment period (Friedman ANOVA and “ post hoc” Wilcoxon matched pair test, p<0, 05), but there were no statistically significant differences in symptom reduction between the laser and placebo group (Mann-Whitney U-test, p>0, 05). Our data suggest that LLLT acts as a successful placebo in BMS patients, and, at least in parameters given, the specific biomodulatory effect on BMS doesn’ t seem to exist.
